Sun Spots is part of the ongoing series of paintings called Deep Space which I began in 1998. As the paintings evolved from galaxies, planets and stars, I have become much more aware of the vastness of this universe.
The Deep Space series has depicted galaxies, planets and stars that were dark and cold. In 2005 I moved into a new studio which faces east. Every morning the sun rises above the tree line and the light floods my studio. The light from that star, the sun, inspired this current series, Sun Spots.
In the world of astronomy, the experts consider our sun to be a yellow runt. It is as common as a grain of sand on a sandy beach. The core is so dense that it takes the light that left that core more than 100,000 years (before the last ice age) to break free. It then takes only eight minutes to reach earth, 93 million miles away.
Sun Spots is my response to the power of this star. It is the giver and taker of life.
